First founded in the early 1950s in the city of Bursa in northwestern Turkey by Mr.Hakki Baykal, Baykal today is firmly positioned as a leading manufacturer and global supplier of “Sheet Metal Working Machinery” specialising in the production of press brakes, shears, notchers, punching machines, laser cutting systems, plasma cutting equipment and water-jet cutting machines.

Baykal company started building machines first time in 1960 and it was known to be the first company in Turkey to produce power guillotines and hydraulic press brakes. Baykal also was to first Turkish machine-builder to apply series machine production in a factory environment in the early 1970s. For its manufacturing operations Baykal presently utilises 4 factories which together combine a production area of 75,000 square meters, making it one of Europe’s largest facility for sheet metal working machinery, and generally, for machine-tools production., The total workforce at Baykal is currently numbered at 650 employees and is composed of highly trained and skilled machine operators and assembly technicans supported by a staff of 40 engineers. All the machines offered by Baykal are designed, manufactured, assembled and finished wholly at Baykal’s purpose-built, high-tech plants in a CAD environment with extensive use of CNC machining and modern workshop equipment.

Baykal company is accredited for the ISO 9001 Certification issued by the German TÜV institution and since 1995 the company has been building machines in conformity with the Europan CE regulations for safety. In addition, all Baykal products are manufactured with the TSE and TSEK quality certificates issued by the Turkish Standards Institution.

Since the last 30 years Baykal has progressed to become a major exporter of sheet metal working machines to the world markets with customers located in all the
machine-tool consuming countries of the global geography from Americas to Asia and
to Australia. Baykal is currently represented in over 80 countries worldwide through appointed dealers. In the base market of Turkey, Baykal sheet metal working machines have traditionally commanded a leading market share thanks to company’s pioneering role in the development of Turkey’s machine industry and its never-lessening emphasis on quality, service and customer relations. During the last period of 2007, Baykal finalised the acquisition of Weinbrenner GmbH which is one of Germany’s flagship producers of advanced metalforming and bending machinery. With this acquisition a new high-technology base has been added to Baykal Group’s operations. In 2008 Baykal produced the largest press brake machine ever made in Turkey and exported it to Germany. The machine, also one of the biggest press brakes in the world, has 20 meters bending length with 2500 tons of bending force. The weight of the machine itself is 420 tons. In February 2009, Baykal completed a major and very significant machine installation in the State of Pennsylvania, U.S.A. The machine is a monoblock press brake with 12 meters bending length and 2500 tons bending capacity, which the buyer will use in manufacturing the steel construction parts of the new “Freedom Tower”, which is now being built in New York city in place of the old “World Trade Center”. This “giant” press brake has a weight of 320 tons and it represents a milestone reference for what Turkish sheetmetal industry and engineering is capable of after years of sustained progress.

Also during 2009 a new division was formed within the Baykal group, Baykal Machine Tools Division, to diversify into the manufacturing of “metal-cutting type of machine tools”. The first generation of these new products is the BF Series Vertical Machining Centers, which will be debuted first time at EMO Milano this year.

Since 1988 Baykal has been a regular participant at the international machine-tool trade shows. The most notable exhibitions where Baykal products are displayed are EMO (Hannover/Milan), EUROBLECH (Hannover) and FABTECH (Chicago/Atlanta). Apart from these major shows, Baykal machines can be seen in many local-country exhibitions through participation with the local agent. According to FORTUNE-Turkey top 500 List of Turkey’s largest industrial companies ; Baykal is ranked 395th for its total turnover and 166th for its export turnover in 2008.

As an internationally-recognised company in its industrial sector, Baykal’s objective is to pursue policies to live up to that recognition by its clientele and to well-represent Turkey in the international markets as a dependable professional machine-tool building company.
